About Emily

  • Fashion, style, pretty things have always peaked my fancy. The golden rule, give a hoot, don't pollute, save the whales are all a part of the fabric that is my childhood. Crafty and creative grandmothers, and a few years as a fashionista, then a Martha Stewart employee (proudly), and finally full circle as a yoga teacher...now I am living my dream of doing what I love and being who I want to be. Eco-Chic Weddings is my first book, I just finished a book for Popular Mechanics, and I am about to begin my second Eco-Chic book...I am here to inspire, enlighten, and learn from you dear reader. Peace.

You can have a "destination" wedding without leaving town--just incorporate some fun and quirky travel themes into your wedding planning. But if you are leaving on a jet plane for your destination fiesta, think about reducing your impact in other ways--carbon offset programs, recycled invitations, online rsvps....and bon voyage!

the green vase {livia cetti} + {anthropologie} eco-friendly weddings

I find this layout from an old Anthropologie catalog to be simply stunning. Livia Cetti, formerly at Martha Stewart Weddings, and now the creative force behind The Green Vase, styled this shoot. All other items were found on ebay...except for the gorgeous necklace, from eco-fabulous Lucina Jewelry.

don't have a green wedding

I am not a fan of the "green themed" wedding, as I think I've said before. For me, this is not about a theme...it's about a way of being. Saving resources, including your time and money, and enjoying the process is what it's all about.

Actually Eco-Chic Weddings is a little bit of a misnomer--because the way I define Eco-Chic doesn't necessarily have any connection to "Eco." At lease not in the traditional sense of the word. Eco-Chic Weddings  just seemed like the most expedient title at the time...plus, it's pretty catchy.  But what I really meant to say was "Sustainable Weddings." But at the time (2003), my editor didn't think anyone would "get" the word sustainable.

Gardentable

The idea is to have a wedding to match your lifestyle. We all need to be a bit more of a conscious consumer, and planning a wedding is a great way to start. The person I think about as my "inspiration" is my great-grandmother Sullivan, who was married on Sunday morning after Church in the parlour of her parent's home in Rock Island, Illinois. Following the ceremony, the guests retreated to the backyard for tea sandwiches and punch. Simple, sweet, and quite memorable.

I really don't want you to feel like this is just another layer to add to the already complicated matter of planning a wedding. It is the complete opposite. It is about taking a deep breathe and letting go of expectations, going with what feels natural. (the beautiful image above is from Brown Mouse Photography. {a little peep from me} celebrate fiber arts + learn how to make paper

Just a couple of little things from me...still buried under my book project...first...

Fiber_biennal
If you happen to be in Philadelphia, maybe you can go to the Fiber Biennial at the Snyderman-Works Gallery. Artists such as (from left) Kari Birch, Susie Brandt, and Nancy Herman exhibit their work, and express the many transformations and applications possible with materials...from felt, to beads, to paint. And then...

Take a look at the lovely Montessori by Hand, and perhaps purchase one of her sweet aprons, or buy yourself a pattern and make it yourself. And, she has a fantastic tutorial about how to make your own paper...another example of how to transform fiber goods and extend their usefulness.

trash art by aurora robson

Aurorarobson

Turning the idea of trash on its head, artist Aurora Robson shows the beauty and complexity in man-made material things. Depressing and inspiring at the same time, she also shows us an alternative to toxic landfills...

Find out how one community is fighting to improve their urban community by lobbying against landfills and other unhealthy initiatives.
Sustainable South Bronx.

Do some digging on your own to find local organizations you can support, either through volunteering or financial contribution. Remember--social causes aren't necessarily halfway around the globe, they just might be in your own backyard.

how to learn {almost} everything: expert village

Want to learn how to make your own floral arrangement? How to create the perfect chignon? Now you have a place to go...Expert Village has random how-to videos for everything from how to be a ventriloquist (might be good during those toasts...) to applying your make-up. It's a little easier to navigate than YouTube just because it's all specifically how-tos.

madonna + martha stewart + malawi

I was reading Martha Stewart's Blog (The Martha Blog), and I saw these photos she took at Madonna's benefit for Malawi. The table top design was so simple, chic, and easy to do.

You could just opt for the little arrangements, which are small containers with about 4 roses a piece. You can choose locally grown roses (but should plan a summer wedding), or use organic flowers. Because you don't need that many flowers, you won't be spending an arm and a leg in the process. It would be simple for almost anyone to create these arrangements, so you can order your flowers from Organic Bouquet, or California Organic Flowers, or find a local farm, and hire someone to create the flower arrangements for you on the day of your wedding. You can also find pretty containers in a sustainable way-etsy is full of handmade goodness, Craig's List has tons of reusable stuff, and of course there's always Ebay.
