About Emily

  • Fashion, style, pretty things have always peaked my fancy. The golden rule, give a hoot, don't pollute, save the whales are all a part of the fabric that is my childhood. Crafty and creative grandmothers, and a few years as a fashionista, then a Martha Stewart employee (proudly), and finally full circle as a yoga teacher...now I am living my dream of doing what I love and being who I want to be. Eco-Chic Weddings is my first book, I just finished a book for Popular Mechanics, and I am about to begin my second Eco-Chic book...I am here to inspire, enlighten, and learn from you dear reader. Peace.

You can have a "destination" wedding without leaving town--just incorporate some fun and quirky travel themes into your wedding planning. But if you are leaving on a jet plane for your destination fiesta, think about reducing your impact in other ways--carbon offset programs, recycled invitations, online rsvps....and bon voyage!

eco-friendly honeymoon: bermuda + 9 beaches resort

Oh how I wish I could go on an island getaway. Travel is one of the ways we can have the most impact on the global community, economically, socially, and environmentally. I always love to see different resorts like 9 Beaches in Bermuda adopting more sustainable practices.

walk boston + new etsy friends

Well I had a whirlwind weekend in Boston at the "green" event. But mostly I enjoyed learning a bit more about Cambridge, which is where we stayed.

J'aime Colette is a Boston based  indie design label.

I also met two lovely Etsy designers at the event: Zestyb and Kiss and Tell Cards.

The best part of the weekend was walking the streets of Beacon Hill and Cambridge with my husband and daughter. It was windy and cold, the perfect weather for our own brisk walking tour.
If you go to Boston, you can take a guided  walking tour with Walk Boston.

I also took a fantastic yoga class at Karma Yoga, from a Baptiste trained teacher.

I'll tell you more later...

eco-friendly travel: island outpost, jamaica

Planning your eco-honeymoon? Go to the Island Outpost site and take a look at one of their several properties in Jamaica...and be sure to read the bit about social responsibility...I've only been to Jamaica once, but that was to a Sandals with someone I would rather forget...

You might like to read this excellent piece about green travel by Andrea Bennett for Travel and Leisure. Oh, and by the way, Sandals may not be as cool as some other chic-destinations, but all of their locations are Green Globe Certified. Not that I would revisit my Sandals vacation, for so many reasons.

{eco-travel} south of the border {eco paraiso}

Eco Paraíso is a hidden paradise on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It was  designed  to meet  ecological standards. It is situated directly on a pristine natural beach, in the middle of  an expansive plantation of indigenous coconut palm trees.

{eco-travel} honeymoons, trains, and no planes: plan a green wedding with amtrak

Train travel is so underrated. Maybe in today's fast-paced culture, it's just not fast enough. Of course, that's mainly true in the U.S. In Europe,  Eurorail is a way of life. Go to sleep in Paris, wake up on the Riviera, ooh la la. With a Europass and and a backpack, you're good to go. But, I have a love for train travel here in the States.  S0, why not take your honeymoon by train? Who says you have to go to a congested airport, jump on a plane in order to have a good time? And how about those guests; cancel those carbon credits, and just have them travel by train...to your wedding, of course, not on the honeymoon...

Not one of the major online travel sites even talk about traveling by train. Not Expedia, Travelocity, or Orbitz. What's up with that?  The only travel site that really good information (other than Amtrak, of course) is Squidoo. Did you know that long distance train travel is actually in peril here in the US? Amazing, but true. How could this be, when traveling by train is one of the best ways to be green, reduce our carbon emissions, save resources. How come the government doesn't support train travel? Well, the automotive industry has the money, and lobbying groups, to influence the powers that be. But we need our trains!  So, I suggest we all start taking the train whenever possible. The first long distance train ride I took was from New York to Colorado. I had the time of my life. Check out the California Zephyr route as a possible honeymoon...cool, right? The man in seat 61 has loads of good ideas about train travel as an alternative to airtravel...plus, I have a bit of a cyber crush on him ;)

{could be eco-chic}
the tip jar + love luggage joint

I'll file this in the category of "could be" and "should be" eco-chic...these fabulous bags, from Love Luggage Joint (via The Tip Jar), come in leather and...PVC...Recycled PVC, or plastic, is  available from many different sources, and I would like to take this opportunity to suggest these guys look into it...pronto, because with price points like $145 and $30, these bags will be flying out the door, I tell you (and right into my hands...)

bride's {eco-chic} bag: freddy & ma

Wedding dress. Check. Ring. Check. Groom. Check. Cute clutch to carry on your wedding day? No problem, freddy & ma has you covered. A favorite of the stars walking the red carpet, freddy & ma lets you design your bag from a variety of custom designed prints. Or, you can give them your own fabric, say a hemp silk dupioni, or maybe part of your wedding dress fabric...no reason to carry a bag that doesn't look smashing on your day, and that you can keep to reuse as a married lady too.

And, Freddy and Ma is a very sustainable company; they manufacture everything locally, there's virtually no waste in their production, and they support the small crafter and artist. Plus, they're really nice.

{eco-chic} honeymoons: travel wisely

Every year, couples spend about 8 billion dollars on honeymoons (Conde Nast Survey 2006). Hence, you can make an enormous impact, both on the environment as well as on the people who live in the places you travel to. I've listed my top ten resources for planning your eco-chic honeymoon, as well as an excellent article from May 2007 Conde Nast Traveler illustrating how important our tourism dollars are to building a better world.
