About Emily

  • Fashion, style, pretty things have always peaked my fancy. The golden rule, give a hoot, don't pollute, save the whales are all a part of the fabric that is my childhood. Crafty and creative grandmothers, and a few years as a fashionista, then a Martha Stewart employee (proudly), and finally full circle as a yoga teacher...now I am living my dream of doing what I love and being who I want to be. Eco-Chic Weddings is my first book, I just finished a book for Popular Mechanics, and I am about to begin my second Eco-Chic book...I am here to inspire, enlighten, and learn from you dear reader. Peace.

{eco-decor idea} design public + practicing fair trade

I truly enjoy the dramatic effect of a fabulous floral arrangement. Unfortunately, flower centerpieces and all that goes with them are the ultimate in wedding waste...wiring, oasis, disposable containers, and unhealthy--and unregulated by the FDA--pesticide residue on the flowers themselves; the result is basically a socio/eco-tragedy (in many cases, workers in countries that produce these flowers are not treated fairly, and often are exposed to unhealthy levels of pesticides in enclosed environments). But you can create drama and style with more than just flowers. For example, try these reusable mobiles from Design Public. Imagine them hanging above each of your table. Kind of fabulous, no?

By the way, you might like I find it encouraging that Sam's Club, the warehouse club division of Wal-Mart, has announced it is now offering Fair Trade Certified roses online--just in time for Valentine's Day.

{simple silhouettes) eco-chic + sweatshop free

There are many perfectly lovely, perfectly simple wedding dresses that I would consider to be eco-chic... you just have to know where to look. I love what Christina Dalle Pazze has created with her beautiful company, Simple Silhouettes. Many brides find their way to her salon because of the practical and beautiful bridesmaid dresses, but her bridal gowns are also  sublime. I've spoken with Christina about using eco-friendly fabrics in her line, and she is totally into it. But, I think the most important reason to order a dress fomr someone like Christina is that you will know that your dress is sweatshop free...

Coco
That's a quote from the grand dame of fashion, Coco Chanel. I would also add the work "fair" to that statement, as in "fair trade".  We've all flipped through the thick bridal magazines replete with bridal gown advertisers...do you ever wonder who makes those dresses, and what their quality of life is?  Simple Silhouettes is based here in New York, in a beautiful sunny loft in the middle of SoHo....definitely eco-chic!
