About Emily

  • Fashion, style, pretty things have always peaked my fancy. The golden rule, give a hoot, don't pollute, save the whales are all a part of the fabric that is my childhood. Crafty and creative grandmothers, and a few years as a fashionista, then a Martha Stewart employee (proudly), and finally full circle as a yoga teacher...now I am living my dream of doing what I love and being who I want to be. Eco-Chic Weddings is my first book, I just finished a book for Popular Mechanics, and I am about to begin my second Eco-Chic book...I am here to inspire, enlighten, and learn from you dear reader. Peace.

December 2007

{rebecca thuss} + {martha stewart weddings}

As Style Director for Martha Stewart Weddings, Rebecca Thuss brought her sublime creative eye to everything she designed for the magazine. Witness this tableaux, exquisite in its homage to nature as in the simplicity of its design. Of course, Rebecca painstakingly crafted the little blossoms and birds perched gently upon the branches. The eco-chicness of this setting is found in the utterly reusability of every single item...as well as the total absence of any real flowers, though one might feel as if they are in the middle of a garden wonderland and actually believe they are breathing in the fresh blossoms of springtime.

reduce + reuse: {martha stewart weddings} + {not from a box} recycled invites

I write about sending invites that can be reused, or even saved because they are so lovely in my book Eco-Chic Weddings. Some ideas: seed packets with a bellyband for the invite, an ornament that can be hung on a tree. But, don't do anything tacky, like a magnet. Here are two ideas I really like from past issues of Martha Stewart Weddings:

Bookmarks
Bookmark_msw Book_msw2

The bookmark idea is really for save the date, but I think you could just as easily turn this idea into your wedding invitation. I have always loved glassine envelopes (probably not too eco-friendly), but you could fill the envelopes your favorite {fair trade} tea, or locally harvested, or organic, dried lavendar. The envelopes pictured here have confetti, and are favors, but I think an invitation with the same idea would be sweet too.

And don't forget to use recycled materials!
When I was planning my 2005 wedding, and writing my book at the same time, I went to countless invitation web sites and combed the sites looking for recycled paper options, to no avail. Things are changing, behold Not From A Box Unique Invitations--they've just added a line of recycled paper...that doesn't have any seeds or petals in it ;)

earthpledge futurefashion with diane von furstenberg: eco-friendly wedding gowns

Why don't  Vera Wang, Amsale, Reem Acra, or Badgley Mischka make Eco-Friendly Wedding Dresses?  FutureFashion White Papers, Earth Pledge's newest publication, endeavors to explain why. And, the forward was written by  Diane Von Furstenberg. The book is full of insight from designers to manufacturers, and everyone in-between. Best of all, it  provides viable solutions and addresses the financial impact of sustainable practices with individual perspectives.
