About Emily

  • Fashion, style, pretty things have always peaked my fancy. The golden rule, give a hoot, don't pollute, save the whales are all a part of the fabric that is my childhood. Crafty and creative grandmothers, and a few years as a fashionista, then a Martha Stewart employee (proudly), and finally full circle as a yoga teacher...now I am living my dream of doing what I love and being who I want to be. Eco-Chic Weddings is my first book, I just finished a book for Popular Mechanics, and I am about to begin my second Eco-Chic book...I am here to inspire, enlighten, and learn from you dear reader. Peace.

October 2007

welcome to my world

It's been a few days since I've posted...I thought I would pull back the veil, I mean curtain, and share a little more about my world. I have also been blog tagged by a few people lately (Planning Forever Events, Earthfriendly Weddings)...A few things about me you may not know...

Blogtag
1. I like to do as I say: I try to live a sustainable lifestyle in everything I do, from reducing my consumption, to lowering my footprint (shopping thrift stores, using public transportation.)
2. I am very likely to pick-up discarded furniture from the street. I've done this since forever (I used to go on yard sale hunts with my Grandmother Saturdays and Sundays).
3. Because I am a scavenger, I tend to be a little bit of a pack rat; so I do forced editing and organizing on a regular basis. I am constantly giving things to friends, and going to the local donation spot in the neighborhood.
4. I like to make things, witness the beaded necklace made from vintage glass beads, and the silly card with fuzzy the caterpillar. I also remake and repurpose many items...the bird was a holiday decoration, now serves as a curtain tieback on a piece of fabric from the 70's; the only thing new in my daughters room is her crib.
5.Speaking of which, some of you may not know that I have an (almost) 8 month old daughter, Sydney Lucille. I take care of her and work from home. But on beautiful Fall days like today, she gets all of my time because she so loves to be outside in the sun with the breeze on her little happy face.

Sometimes I get pulled in so many directions, opportunities come up out of nowhere, my own sense of drive and purpose accelerates.  This is when I talk to my husband, look at my daughter, take a deep breathe and let it all go. If you're like me, this needs to happen pretty much daily. I hope I help you find a little balance in life, and give you ways to be the person you want to be in the world, because that's all any of this is really about. Peace.

bride's dream house: sylvia weinstock + more

If you happen to be in New York this rainy weekend, stop by the Conde Nast/Bride's Magazine "Dream House." There are a experts on hand for the "I Do How-To" event this weekend--and some treats to taste, too. I like this concept, because it isn't just about the day--it's about your married life. Also, they have a great tie-in with the I DO Foundation. BUT don't forget to ask the experts lots of questions about how they would make a wedding "eco-chic." Event Details are below...And about Sylvia Weinstock, I've been meaning to post a recent interview with her that I really liked...more on that  later!

eco-invites: anna bella fine stationery

More and more stationers are offering beautiful, chic invites  using recycled and tree-free paper. So there really is no reason at all why we can't all start using recycled paper instead of virgin wood. Anna Bella Fine Stationery is one of my favorites; here's a new design from their web site called "Luck and Love".

flava favor: world of good + vintage musings

Being eco or sustainable doesn't mean you have to be green. Feast your eyes on this vibrant array that would add color and consciousness to your event.

{eco-friendly} invites: brown sugar design

Thanks to The Tip Jar, I discovered a new invitation resource. I love Brown Sugar Design's invites, and I really like that they communicate the importance of using renewable resources, recycled paper, and reducing waste.

my {eco-chic} wedding: the engagement ring

I don't have a diamond engagement ring, I have an aquamarine, surrounded by diamonds. I love the ring, it's exactly what I wanted. By now I think everyone knows that diamond engagement rings are a fairly recent phenomenon. More and more brides are considering breaking with this tradition and wearing different gemstones. Even with the Kimberley Process, there are many environmental and social problems surrounding diamonds. Also, Princess Diana had a sapphire ring, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis had a 3 carat emerald. So you would be in a very elite group were you to forgo the diamond...

These lovelies are both from Macy's, for less than $1500 each.

my {eco-chic} wedding: flowers

My wedding was in October, but that year the rains were really intense, which meant the dahlias I had planned to have at my wedding were not as plentiful. Nonetheless, I did have  arrangements with dahlias, as well as zinnias, and apples, among other things. This year my husband surprised me with a dozen red roses, which was so lovely of him. But, I know that they wouldn't pass the Veriflora set of standards, unfortunately...Here they are, {yes, with baby's breath}, in a  coffee container I saved. The container is cardboard, so I just slipped a glass inside for the water. The antique desk was a flea market find, and the little chicken egg cups belonged to my mother.

my {eco-chic} wedding: invites

So, because today was my second wedding anniversary, I wanted to share a few things about my wedding that  gave it an eco-chic twist.  I was lucky to find out about Oblation Papers and Press, and they printed my invitations. I kept the "invitation suite" to a minimun, with just a single card, outer envelope, response card with envelope. These are a few of my favorite Oblation designs...

And just for fun, t Junebug Weddings did a layout with unusual fall colors...I just love it...go to their site to see the entire layout--it's beautiful.

my {eco-chic} wedding anniversary: october 15

style me pretty + tara guerard

I just love Tara Guerard's book, 'Southern Weddings: New Looks From the Old South."  Perfect for inspiration, and many of her ideas could be given an "eco-chic" twist. Tara was a guest writer today on Style Me Pretty, and her ideas are so charming. Just look at the confection of a dress on the cover...delicious.
